The Kathmandu Post Features Ang Dolma Sherpa's Eco-Friendly Initiatives (By Srizu Bajracharya)
In an effort to merge environmental consciousness with spiritual traditions, entrepreneur Ang Dolma Sherpa founded Utpala Crafts in 2020 to introduce sustainable practices within Tibetan Buddhist communities. The company produces biodegradable prayer flags (lungtas) and ceremonial scarves (khadas), using natural materials that decompose safely, reducing pollution caused by synthetic alternatives.
Sherpa’s passion for sustainability stems from her upbringing, where resourcefulness and mindful consumption were deeply valued. Recognizing the environmental impact of burning traditional synthetic khadas, she sought a greener alternative that would honor Buddhist customs while protecting nature. Her innovative approach was recognized in 2019 when she won WWF Nepal's 'Greenovation' award for her biodegradable khada concept.
Through Utpala Crafts, Sherpa continues to promote eco-friendly rituals, encouraging practitioners to adopt sustainable choices without compromising spiritual values. Her initiative reflects a growing movement towards responsible cultural preservation, inspiring communities to balance faith and environmental stewardship.
