Handpainted Buddhist Ritual Wangpo Metok Torma
The Wangpo Metok Torma represents the transformative power of wrathful offerings in the tantric tradition, focusing on the cultivation of wisdom and the release of dualistic perceptions of positive and negative. By offering these symbolic substances, one transcends the mental barriers of attachment and aversion. Placed on the shrine, these offerings invoke the blessings of the Buddhas, purifying the mind and deepening spiritual practice. The merit generated through these offerings is dedicated to all sentient beings with the aspiration for their enlightenment.
The word "torma" in Tibetan has two parts. "Tor" means to "throw out," signifying the act of severing attachment to desires and cutting through emotional entanglements that cause suffering. Tormas, made from barley flour and other ingredients, are offered outside in Vajrayana practices as a gesture of generosity. The second syllable, "ma," is a feminine ending, symbolizing maternal care and nurturing. Together, torma represents both freeing oneself from attachment and radiating loving-kindness, much like a mother's love, to all sentient beings.
