Handpainted Buddhist Ritual Shalze Torma
The Peaceful White Torma, also known as Sheva Shalze, symbolizes the boundless offerings of all that is desirable in the world. These offerings traditionally include items like drinking water, flowers, incense, light, food, perfumed water, and music-each representing the peaceful and sensory offerings that inspire positive virtues. The Peaceful Torma is typically placed on a shrine or in front of a mandala during rituals, where it enhances spiritual practices by invoking a sense of harmony and abundance. Its role is to uplift and cultivate inner qualities through these serene and sensory gifts.
The word "torma" in Tibetan has two parts. "Tor" means to "throw out," signifying the act of severing attachment to desires and cutting through emotional entanglements that cause suffering. Tormas, made from barley flour and other ingredients, are offered outside in Vajrayana practices as a gesture of generosity. The second syllable, "ma," is a feminine ending, symbolizing maternal care and nurturing. Together, torma represents both freeing oneself from attachment and radiating loving-kindness, much like a mother's love, to all sentient beings.
