Handpainted Buddhist Ritual Dakpo Shaltse Torma
The Dakpo Shaltse Torma, also known as the Wrathful Food Offering Torma, is rooted in tantric practice and symbolizes the offering of wrathful substances to accumulate wisdom and dissolve dualistic perceptions of good and bad. This intricately crafted torma is made from wood, showcasing beautiful detailing, and is traditionally placed on shrines or in front of the mandala during rituals. Through these offerings, one seeks to transcend conceptual limitations and invite the blessings of enlightened beings.
The word "torma" in Tibetan has two parts. "Tor" means to "throw out," signifying the act of severing attachment to desires and cutting through emotional entanglements that cause suffering. Tormas, made from barley flour and other ingredients, are offered outside in Vajrayana practices as a gesture of generosity. The second syllable, "ma," is a feminine ending, symbolizing maternal care and nurturing. Together, torma represents both freeing oneself from attachment and radiating loving-kindness, much like a mother's love, to all sentient beings.
